A Southerly Wind
By: Savannah

The sun was setting. It was making the sky turn blue, purple, pink, orange, and yellow everywhere. It was as if someone took a huge paint can and spilled all of the paint over the sky, and the thick clouds were where they tried to scrub the paint off. The sun was half over the horizon and half underneath the horizon. It shone one the ocean waters making the water shimmer.

There was no other night like it in Chorpus Christi, Texas. Never had the earth been exposed to such wondrous colors of the evening sky. A young girl watched watched the sunset, here eyes never leaving the golden sphere. She stood upon a huge cliff that looked out onto the ocean. It was a warm, calm summer night. It was just her, the ocean, and the evening sky.

Savannah gazed out onto the ocean watching the sun set. She watched it for awhile and then smiled. Walking up to the edge of the cliff she took both of her hands and positioned them above her head, then she closed her eyes.

A little gust of wind came and then all was silent again. Then another gust came, and soon, the wind began to pick up. Savannah lowered her arms down to make a "T" shape with her body. Wind began to pick up even more now as she started to be lifted into the air. Her hair blew everywhere, the winds were blowing at least over 100 miles per hour now, and the trees were being bent back and forth all the way down to their roots.

The once calm ocean now came alive in furry. The waves were moving rapidly around consuming the beach below and hitting the cliffs with a mighty force. Water went so high, that it almost touched the sky. The sky was now ferocious. It wasn't its wonderful orange, pink, and yellow colors anymore. The sky was dark, pitch black you might say. As if the sun had gone away forever and now the world was in darkness. Sometimes powerful bolts of lightning streamed across the sky, lighting it. The whole world looked as if the end of days was coming.

Savannah just stayed motionless in the air with her hair blowing. The winds increased and increased and increased. Finally Savannah quickly put her arms down and opened her eyes.

" I had that dream again." Savannah told her sister Becky as they walked down the stairs of their home.

" Again?" Becky asked.

" Yeah. Only this time it seemed so real I felt as if I actually was in the dream."

Becky looked at Savannah with a puzzled face, " Well maybe the dream is just telling you how much you miss home. After all you said it was always back in Texas at the beaches." she exclaimed as they both entered the kitchen. Gracie, their youngest sister, was already sitting at the table.

" Yeah, maybe your right. I probably just miss home." Savannah said as she and Becky sat down at the table.

" You miss home?" Savannah's mother asked.

" No... I mean... well...?" was all Savannah could say. Her mother smiled at herself as she sat the plates of eggs, bacon, and toast before the three girls. Then her mother sat down with them and they all ate.

" How could you miss home when New York has so much to offer you?" Savannah's mother asked.

" I don't miss it. Well I miss it yes, but I like our new home too." Savannah said eating some of the eggs placed in front of her. She took a piece of bacon as well and scarfed it down.

" Well see were not quite sure if that's just it." Becky exclaimed.

" What do you mean?" asked Gracie.

" See Savannah's been having these dreams lately and-"

"Becky!" Savannah screamed at her before she could finish.

" Savannah, What about dreams ?" her mother asked.

Savannah sighed and rolled her eyes. She gave Becky a glare before she spoke, " Well... I'm on a cliff at our last home. I was standing there and when I lift my hands wind begins to blow and I lift into the air. It's funny, the more times I have the dream, the more powerful the winds are, and the more real the dream is." Savannah said as she finished her eggs.

" Interesting. Savannah, I would try and pay attention to what dreams tell you. You never now. The dreams could be true." Her mother said.

" Yeah right. Like I can make 100-mile hour winds? Please." Savannah said as she got up and put her dishes in the sink. As Savannah left the kitchen Becky and Gracie got up and left as well. Only their mother was in the kitchen. She watched as Savannah went up the stairs.

" You never know." Her mother said silently with a smile of pride on her face.

" Why was mother acting so weird this morning?" Gracie asked as she and Becky got into Savannah's car.

" I don't know." Savannah said as she threw her bag into the trunk and got into the driver's seat.

" It's because of Savannah's weird dreams, remember?" Becky said putting on her seat belt.

" Oh yeah! You're still having those dreams huh?" Gracie asked.

" I don't know what mom's saying about that dream." Savannah said as she put her sunglasses on, " She's been acting weird ever since we moved here." Savannah said as she looked back to back the car out.

" Wouldn't that be funny." said Gracie, fixing up her light brown hair with her brush.

" Wouldn't what be funny?" Savannah said turning the car around a corner.

" If you could control the winds." Gracie answered as she put her brush away.

" Ha! Me control winds? Only when pigs fly will I be able to control air movement." Savannah said sarcastically.

" Well wouldn't it be cool if you could?" Becky asked.

Savannah didn't say anything for a moment. Then when they got to a stoplight she looked at Becky and then at Gracie who were both looking at her as if waiting for an answer.

" First off, I cannot control winds. Second I will never control winds. It's impossible. And third, why would I want to? I mean there's no use for winds if you could control it." Savannah said looking back at the stoplight that had just turned green. She pushed on the pedals and they started moving again.

" Yeah, but wouldn't it be cool if you could? I mean how would you control it? With your mind, or your hands?" asked Gracie.

" Or like every time you wanted to make winds your eyes would glow?" said Becky enthusiastically.

Becky and Gracie laughed at each other at the thought. As they pulled up on to another stoplight Savannah spoke again.

" How did we even get on the subject of controlling wind? Wasn't what we were really talking about was my dream?" Savannah asked as no one answered. Savannah felt like she was being the enemy and didn't want that. So to lighten the mood she joked about their discussion. " If you ask me, you could just take your hands and point them to that pile of leaves and move your hand around like this and..."

Savannah stopped. She had her hand raised, pointing to a nearby pile of leaves and they were moving. Moving in a spiral around and around. Savannah put her hands down and the leaves went back to the ground. Her face became pale. From that point on no one talked the rest of the way to school.

*********************************************************

Savannah's first day of school went well. She made friends with a girl named Jean and a girl named Kitty. They were both nice to her and befriended her fast. Although Savannah seemed to start to fit into school, she still had that dream and controlling the winds in her mind.

Savannah had joined the cheerleading squad and had stayed after school that day. Along with Jean, who was also on the squad, she did quite well the first day. It wasn't until the middle of their practice did Savannah start to feel light headed. She dismissed it and kept practicing, but is soon got worse and Savannah could not pratice without staggering a bit when she did her jumps. So she left to go home early. Jean offered to help her home, but Savannah refused.

**************************************************

As Savannah pulled up to her house, she saw a weird looking jeep that looked military like in front. A puzzled look grew on Savannah light tan face. She stared at it for a moment and then shrugged her shoulders. She shut her car door and walked inside the house. Her head was still hurting from cheerleading practice and thought maybe she should lay down.

" Mom I'm home early." Savannah yelled.

" Come here a minute Savy, I'm in the living room." Her mother replied back.

Savannah dropped her back-pack on the floor and went to the living room. When she got there she didn't see just her mother, but another elderly man in a wheelchair. He was bald and had somewhat sophisticated clothes on. Also with him was a guy with red shades who looked familiar from school, and a lady with beautiful flowing white hair.

" Savannah could you please sit down for a moment. I have something to tell you." Her mother asked pointing to a chair next to her.

Savannah sat down on the chair keeping her eyes on the mysterious guests in her home. Her hands felt weird and tingly. They felt like they were full of something and that they wanted to release something. On top of that Savannah still had that headache.

" Savannah, this is Mr. Charles Xavier of the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters. Her mother introduced professor X as he wheeled his chair forward a bit.

" Hello Savannah." He said

" Hi." She said back to be nice.

" How are you doing today?" he asked.

" Fine, thank you." she answered.

" Are you really?"

"Huh? What the.." Savannah said as she looked around the room, " Where did that come from?" she asked.

" From me Savannah. I projected my thought into your head. I am a telepath. I can read people's minds, and send my own thoughts into their mind. I am a mutant. And so are Scott here and Ororo. And you too." He exclaimed.

" A mutant? What? How did-?"

" Savannah, a mutant is a person just like you, only they have special abilities... like me." Said her mother as she sent an image of Savannah controlling wind.

Savannah's eyes widened as she saw the images flash into her mind.

" Hey, how did I-?"

" Savannah, I am a mutant too. Sort of like a telepath, but I can only read or project images into people's minds, and manipulate their dreams." Her mother explained to her.

" I don't get any of this." Savannah said putting her head into her hands.

" You will soon Savannah."

" I think that it would be better if we waited until Mr. Caughlyn got here." Said Ororo as she began to push the professor's wheelchair away.

" Mrs. Caughlyn, we shall return in the evening. That way we can talk to you and your husband about Savannah's mutation." Professor Xavier said as he, Ororo, and Scott left.

" All right, thank you Mr. Xavier. We'll see you later." Savannah's mother said as she helped the professor out.

Savannah didn't say a word to her mother, she only left and went upstairs into her room shutting the door behind her. Becky peeked out of her doorway to her room.

" Savannah doesn't know how lucky she is." Becky said shutting the door to her room.

*****************************************************************

Later that Evening-

Savannah was in her room doing her homework peacefully trying to not think about her "abilities". She didn't realize how the time went by, and when she heard her dad come through the back door, she looked at her clock to see it was already 5:59.

She sighed and closed her trigonometry book. As she got up she all of a sudden felt giddy and lightheaded again. Trying to regain her balance, she held her hand up to her head. Savannah couldn't keep her balance anymore and fell on top of her bed.

With her hand still on her head, she groaned in pain. All of a sudden she was beginning to lift up into the air. As she was being lifted up she looked around in terror.

" Oh my God!' she screamed as she tried to set herself down. Her head began pound harder. The gravity in her room began to decrease as almost everything began to lift up and float around. Her books, her backpack, her lamps, and more. She floated around trying to reach something to pull her down, but just about everything was floating in the air.

Savannah screamed. All of a sudden the pain stopped and everything fell down again, even herself. At that time Savannah's parents came running into her room to see what happened. As they came in they saw everything out of place, and saw Savannah breathing heavily on her bed.

" Sweetie, what happened?!" her mother screamed as she went over to her, sitting down on her bed.

" Did you decided to remodel or something?" her father said, as she examined her room.

Savannah looked over at him, still breathing heavily.

" I... I don't know what happened. This pain came into my head, and I began to float in the air, like their was no gravity or something."

" Savannah don't lie to your mother and I. What really happened?" her father asked.

" George, don't be too hard on Savy. She's going through a tough time right now." Her mother said.

" What do you mean?" he asked raising an eyebrow. Savannah's mother, holding Savannah in her arms, nodded to her father, but Savannah didn't see it.

" Darling I was going to tell you this, but I didn't have the chance to downstairs. You see, our daughter is going through some... changes in her life."

"Changes? You mean she...." Savannah's father asked.

"Yes." Her mother exclaimed. " I'm expecting a professor from a special institute to talk to both of us about helping Savy with her changes. He should be arriving any minute." She said.

At that time the doorbell rang. Savannah and her parents went downstairs to see Gracie and Becky open the door. Standing in front of the doorway was a furry blue person in an unusual uniform.

" What the heck?!" Savannah's father screamed. " Who are you?"

" Is dis de Caughlyn residence?" the blue furred German spoke.

" Who wants to know!" George spoke.

" I just vhanted to let you know, I have come on behalf of Professor Xavier." The blue creature answered.

"Oh! I was expecting the Professor." Savannah's mother explained, but the blur furred creature ignored her. He took two lamps near him, yanked it out of their sockets, and hurled it towards Savannah's family faster than they could react.

As the lamp came hurling towards them Savannah closed her eyes tightly, only hearing her family scream, and the sounds of whooshing coming all around her. She waited for it to hit her, but it never did. As Savannah opened her eyes, she saw that the two lamps where floating right in front of her. Her eyes widened to notice that wind was holding them, and keeping them from hitting her and her family. She squinted her eyes and the two lamps fell and broke, then she gave a smile to herself.

"I guess pigs flew today.."

" Ha ha ha! Dis is not over yet!" the blue creature yelled as he came running towards Savannah on all fours. She smiled as she raised her hands and wind blew the furry creature out of the house a long with the broken lamp pieces.

" Savannah, come on! Lets get out of here!" Gracie cried as she and the rest of the family began to head up stairs.

" No! You guys go to a safe place! I'll take care of that creature!" she yelled at them.

" Savannah-" her father screamed. " No dad! Take the rest of the family upstairs. I can handle it!" she interrupted him. Without hesitation, Savannah's father lead her sisters and mother up the stairs and away from danger.

Savannah waited for the blue furred guy to come back, but someone else appeared in the door way this time. It was a young kid, about the age of fifteen or so. He had blond hair, and was smiling a evilish smile.

" You won't get away. The X-Men are going finish you off!" he told her.

" The X-Men? What are the X-Men?" she asked him.

" You can say we are somewhat like mutant bounty hunters." He told her.

" Then stay away from my family! They aren't mutants! I'm the one you want!" she screamed at him.

" That's for sure." He mumbled to himself as he came running towards her.

Savannah ran away from him and headed up the stairs. As she got to the top she saw a bookcase full of books. She raised her hand and wind blew the book off the shelves.

" It's time I try my new powers." She said to herself. She guided the books, with her wind, towards the blond haired kid. As the guy came up the stairs, Savannah made the wind guide the books to hit him. However, the kid ducked out of the way and jumped right up in front of Savannah. She smiled as she made a twist of the hand, and the books came flying back to hit the blonde kid right smack in the head. He fell to the floor as Savannah ran into the office that her dad had in their house. There against the wall opposite of the doorway was her family. She glanced at them for a second and then herd a voice. She turned around to see a lady with white hair. Savannah recognized her from earlier when she visited with that man in the wheelchair.

" Why don't you just leave me alone!" Savannah screamed.

" Because it is our duty of the X-Men to hunt down mutants and exterminate them!" said the lady.

" That's it! You asked for it! You are not getting me or my family!" Savannah screamed. She closed her eyes and raised her arms. Wind began to blow as Savannah lifted up in to the air. Books, papers, folders, and pens began to fly everywhere in the room. The lady had to dodge them sometimes so that they wouldn't hit her. She tried to get near Savannah so that she could get her, but the winds were too strong for her. Savannah's family was huddled near a wall and watched in amazement as the books and papers swirled around them, creating a protective barrier around them. Savannah felt like she was in her dream again with the ocean and the cliff...

" Savannah! Savannah! Can you hear me! It is I, the Professor. Listen to me! What you see is not really my X-Men. It is another mutant by the name of Mystique. She can shape shift into any living being. She is trying to get you to hate my recruits, but what she says is not true! Please, we want to help you! We are here at your house, but cannot help you if you keep controlling your winds like this. Please stop them, and we will get ride of Mystique for you!"

Savannah heard this in her mind. She hesitated for a minute, not sure if she should trust this voice in her head. However, she eventually stopped the winds. She came back down to the ground as all was calm again. The lady looked at Savannah. Her hair was all messed up and she was breathing heavily. She was not happy. Just at that moment a red beam came hitting the lady, making her fall to the ground, and change shape.

A guy with weird looking glasses came into the room. Following him was a red headed girl, a girl with brown and white hair, another girl who had here hair in a ponytail, and then came a blue fuzzy creature, a blond boy, a guy who had claws coming from his hand, and a lady with white hair escorting a guy in a wheelchair.

" Get out of her Mystique, or you'll be a nice rug in my room!" Wolverine yelled snarling at her.

" Oh! You X-Men! I hate you!" Mystique screamed as she changed into a raven and flew out of the house. The red headed girl ran over to Savannah and asked if she was okay.

" Yeah, I'm fine... hey, aren't' you Jean Grey from school?" Savannah asked as she came up on her feet.

" Yeah! Hey, I guess we have something in common huh? We're both mutants." Jean said smiling.

" What is going on her! First you attack us and now you help us?! What are you doing!" Savannah's father asked in rage glaring at the blue furry man known as Nightcrawler.

" Mr. Caughlyn I apologize. You obviously have gone through a lot right now and are very confused. If we all could go downstairs, I'm sure I can straighten this all out." The professor said. So everyone went downstairs and the professor explained to Savannah's family about her mutations, how Cerebro detected it, how he contacted Savannah's mother, how she helped tell Savannah she had powers by giving her dreams of it, how Mystique tried to get her family to hate us, but failed, and then described that Savannah could get help controlling and get training for her powers.

" Well, this certainly explains a lot." Said Savannah's father after everything was explained to him.

" George, I think Savannah should go. I never had any help with my powers, and now that Savannah has been offered help, I want her to take it."

" She'll be in good hands Mr. and Mrs. Caughlyn. She'll fit right in at the institute." Jean said.

" I can assure you it will be good to have two wind riders at the Insitute. With my experience I can help her learn to be as great as I am." Ororo exclaimed winking at Savannah.

" And with time, Savannah will be able to control her gravitational abilities without having headaches." The professor added.

" Hmm... then it's settled! Savannah, you're going to go live with these, X-Men and get help with your powers." Her father stated. He looked puzzled all of a sudden as he began to search frantically for his checkbook.

"How much is this going to cost?" he asked.

The X-Men laughed. "Don't worry Mr. Caughlyn, money is not a concern at my insitute." the Professor explained.

Savannah smiled as she looked over at the X-Men, who smiled back at her.

" Okay! I'll do it!" she said standing up.

" Welcome to the team... Hurricane." said Ororo.

THE END
