Irene's past has not been revealed. The only thing that is known is that she took care of Rogue as her foster mother. She foresaw that Rogue would be a mutant and what her powers would be, but didn't know when it would happen. In order to help prevent her powers from hurting Rogue she isolated her. Irene knew Mystique, and when Rogue's powers finally kicked in, Irene tried to help Rogue by placing her with Mystique. Irene knew that Mystique was Rogue's adopted mother, but how she and Mystique knew each other has not been revealed. Irene saw the future of Mystique and Rogue's lives being placed in the hands of Apocalypse and warned them. Since then she has not been seen.
Irene cares for Rogue like she were her own daughter. She wants what is best for Rogue, and does not seem at all like Mystique. She is blind, but uses her gifts to help find her way around. It is not known if her powers are the cause of her blindness, but they may be. Irene may be able to see the future, but because the future can be altered (i.e. by different choices made by people) the farther she looks into the future the lest predictable it becomes and the less accurate it is.
